MICRESS® Online Training
September 1st to 9th, 2020

The MICRESS® team has the pleasure to annouce an upcoming MICRESS® training. Due to the ongoing safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the training will be held online. The goal of this two-day tutorial is to help students and researchers from the field of computational materials science to get started with microstructure simulations. Training participants will be introduced by experts in the field (including the developers of the code) to the use of MICRESS® in order to gain hands-on experience that can directly be applied to their own research. All lectures will be held via Microsoft Teams while participants will have the opportunity to configure and run their own MICRESS® simulation during multiple practical exercises using an online simulation platform. Access to MICRESS® will be provided as a cloud service. There is no need to have an own installation or license file. Training groups will provide three time slots to accommodate for participants in different time zones.

GroupTime
Group A September 1st and 2nd, 2020 from 9 am to 3 pm CEST
(recommended for participants from Asia and Europe)
Group B September 3rd and 4th, 2020 from 4 pm to 10 pm CEST
(recommended for participants from America and Europe)
Group C September 8th and 9th, 2020 from 9 am to 3 pm CEST
(recommended for participants from Asia and Europe)

Registration

Computational scientists from both academia and industry are encouraged to register for the training. The registration deadline is August 14th, 2020. Participation in the event is free of charge. The number of participants is limited to 25 per group. Please limit registration to a maximum of two participants per institution. Training places will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. In case of a high interest in this tutorial - exceeding the number of available places - we intend to re-perform the training within a month after the first event.

Program

The scope of the training is to provide the participants with first hands-on experience in using the MICRrostructure Evolution Simulation Software MICRESS®. Challenges to be solved by the participants will demonstrate some strategic approaches towards own simulations, e.g.

  • How to generate and import microstructures
  • How to modify the initial conditions for a simulation
  • How to alter the boundary conditions for a simulation
  • How to add a further chemical element into an existing simulation
  • How to add a further phase into an existing simulation
  • How to go from a 2D simulation to a 3D simulation
  • How to use different models for grain growth
  • How to set different nucleation conditions in solid state transformations
  • How to couple thermodynamic datasets
A detailed training program will be published here by the end of August.

Tutorial lectures and assistance during hands-on exercises will be provided by Bernd Böttger, Georg J. Schmitz, Janin Eiken, Lukas Koschmieder, and Ralph Altenfeld.

Pre-Training

Please feel encouraged to complete the following pre-training tasks to be best prepared for the training event.

Task 1
  10 mins

Watch MICRESS Phenomenology Part 1 to get an introduction into thermodynamics.

Watch MICRESS Phenomenology Part 2 to get an introduction into diffusion and kinetics.

Watch MICRESS Phenomenology Part 3 to get an introduction into multi-phase-field modelling.

Watch MICRESS at work to learn about coupling of thermodynamics and phase-field-modelling.

Task 5
  8 mins

Watch MICRESS Post-Processing Overview to get an overview of common tools for MICRESS post-processing.

Watch DP_MICRESS Post-Processing Basic Introduction to learn about the features and operational use of DP_MICRESS.

Download and install DP_MICRESS.

Download the following MICRESS simulation examples.

Open each of the examples with DP_MICRESS and inspect the corresponding output.
